Tiger Salamander
Place of Origin and Range | The Tiger salamander is a North American species of mole salamander. |
Description | Adults are usually blotchy with grey, green, or black, and have large, lidded eyes. They have short snouts, thick necks, sturdy legs, and long tails. |
Adult Size | Can grow up to 10 in (25 cm) |
Accommodation | These salamanders will do just find in several inches of regularly rinsed sphagnum moss. Be sure to keep a regular temperate habitat. Don't let it get cool and damp. Warm and humid is the goal. Keep a small dish of fresh water in there at all times. Change daily. Tiger salamanders are popular as pets. A 20 US gallon aquarium is used to house this species. Non-chemical treated topsoil is a recommended substrate, usually 4-5 inches deep, as these salamanders love to burrow. Coco fibre is also a safe alternative. |
Lifespan | Can live up to 20 years |
Feeding / Diet | Their diets consist largely of small insects and worms, though it is not rare for an adult to consume small frogs and baby mice. |
