King Baboon Tarantula
Place of Origin and Range | The King Baboon Tarantula is found in most of East Africa, especially Kenya and Tanzania. |
Description | Like all old world spiders, the king baboon tarantula has no urticating hairs, and can be very defensive. When provoked, they rear up, and strike down repeatedly. This is one of only a few Theraphosid spiders that can stridulate as a major defense mechanism. The stridulation sound effect is produced by rubbing the femurs of the 1st and 2nd pair of legs, which when combined with rearing up, produces a formidable defense. The king baboon spider is preyed upon by birds, baboons, and other mammals. Some describe these spiders as looking like Velvet. |
Adult Size | Can grow up to 8 in ( 20 m ) |
Accommodation | These spiders live in a desert type habitat. Be sure to have enough substrate to allow burrowing. A mild temperature with a basking spot at 21- 25'C (69 - 77'F). Typically they are kept in a deep tank with 25 to 30 cm (10-12 inches) of substrate such as sand with a small amount of moist substrate for humidity. Adult Pelinobius muticus can be kept in converted aquarium and provided with plenty of ventilation and a very deep substrate (at least 25 cm deep). Spiderlings can be kept in small containers such as pill tubs and waxworm tubs. Slightly larger specimens can be kept in live food tubs. |
Lifespan | Lifespan is unknown, the babies are very slow growing indicating longevity. |
Feeding / Diet | Its diet consists primarily of earthworms and toads. However, because of its size and opportunistic predatory behavior, it is not uncommon for this species to kill and consume a variety of insects and small terrestrial vertebrates. In the wild it has been observed feeding on rodents, frogs and toads, lizards, and snakes. |
